Excerpt from Variations in Landscape (2025, pp.25-26): Other works like my own Along Middlesex County Road 14, 2018 (IMAGE 18), while a distant comparison to Jack Chambers’ 401 Towards London ‘No. 1, 1968–69 (IMAGE 19), it is reflective of this “wow moment” described by Mark Cheetham. Cheetham (2013, p. 17) notes that the “genesis of the image has become legend” where: Chambers was driving eastbound on Highway 401 from London. In his rear-view mirror he saw the expansive and perfectly harmonious landscape captured here. It was for him an epiphany, a “wow moment” that inspired him to resume painting after a significant break during which he was dissatisfied with the medium. He later photographed and then transferred the image to the large-scale panel. While my work is very different than Chambers’ there is this similar message of place and an aesthetic of a landscape we only see in our rear-view mirrors, of a place and moment lost to time. I too caught my image from the corner of my eye while driving, photographed it, and transferred it to a larger scale. Today, that small structure has collapsed and is no longer there.
